          About the State Sheriff's Posses

The Washington State Mounted Sheriff’s Posse Association is comprised of approximately eight counties across the state. Posse Members must posses the qualities of character needed to uphold the tradition of goodwill and sportsmanship as they represent their counties on a state level.

Members of the Mounted Posses of yesteryear came to the aid of their communities whenever a sudden need arose. Although high-tech law enforcement has changed the role of the Posses somewhat, their goals remain the same. Today's Posses still work with local law enforcement to provide assistance in search and rescue, crowd control, mounted security, natural disasters and crime reduction programs.

Promotion of family horsemanship is another area in which the Posses make social and educational contributions to their communities. They sponsor play days, trail rides, and competitions so that young and old alike can improve their horsemanship skills. The Posse members receive no financial reimbursement for their work and pay most of their expenses out of their own pockets. Members reflect the "get involved" attitude and the spirit of volunteerism that is a vital part of our Western Heritage.
